Determining IROC-Z Authenticity
Remember, these items only tell you if the body is an IROC-Z body. To verify if it is an IROC-Z motor, you will have to get the Engine ID number off the block. I will posting those in the future.
1) First check the year of the car, 1985-1990. The 10 digit on the VIN determines the year:
1985 = F
1986 = G
1987 = H
1988 = J
1989 = K
1990 = L
2) Verify that you have the IROC-Z RPO Then go the center glove box and write down all the RPO code (see picture below) on your list inside your center glove box, they are as follows:
1985 = B4Z
1986 = B4Z
1987 = B4Z
1988 = Z28
1989 = Z28
1990 = Z28
Please note that this body RPO code is also under the hood but varies by location.
3) If the RPO code list is gone - check the do the following:
For 1985 - If your 8th digit is a "G", than you have an IROC-Z. Only IROC-Z's could have a "G" as its 8th digit. Please keep in mind that there were IROC-Z's that did not have a "G" as the 8th digit, that just makes it more difficult to determine if it truly is an IROC-Z.
For 1986 - Your 8th digit on your vin could have been and F, G, or an H.
For 1987 - Your 8th digit on your vin could be F, H or an 8. If its an 8, you definitely have an IROC-Z.
For 1988 - Your 8th digit on your vin could be an F or an 8. If its an 8, you definitely have an IROC-Z.
For 1989 - Your 8th digit on your vin could be an F or an 8. If its an 8, you definitely have an IROC-Z.
For 1990 - Your 8th digit on your vin could be an F or an 8. If its an 8, you definitely have an IROC-Z.
