Transmission Shift Kits
QUESTION: Leo from Ca asks: I was wondering if I should put a shift kit in my 85 Iroc-z or just get my tranny rebuilt or put in a better tranny. I notice that in second gear it tends to slip and i want a good tranny that will let me get off the line faster.

FYI, Shiftworks manufactures shifter conversion kits for GM transmissions. Check out their site at
www.shiftworks.com . They and their distributors should have plenty to say in this area. |

Jeff Goldstein answers: Yes, I highly recommend a shift kit for the transmission. Aside from giving you the performance you are looking for, a shift kit will prolong the life of the transmission because of the sharper and quicker shifts which result in less wear on the gears.

Mike Richardson answers: If your car is slipping in second plan on having a rebuild done. DO NOT INSTALL SHIFT KIT First off you will be draining out all that gritty old tranny fluid. when you install the kit and put fresh fluid in your slipping will be worse. By the time a tranny starts slipping its in pretty bad shape. Your ride will be going nowwhere if you put the kit in. Even if it does work for a little while chances are the first few "test it out miles" are gonna killit . I have a TCI street fighter 700 r4 with 2500 stall and its has a killer attention grabbing, getting sideways second gear hit.

1st thing I would do is check the fluid. My tranny was slipping because it was low at one time. If yours is low, fill it and then your next step will be to determine......how did it the fluid get out? If this is not the case, your tranny is going to need a rebuild. I rebuilt mine and threw a B&M shift kit in it and it runs great. I also added a transmission cooler for the sharper more crisp shifts. It is definitely a good thing to have though. Also, if you are looking for that take off power let me assure you that the 700R4 is better on that than say a turbo 350. The 700R4's 1st gear ratio is very low. There are few trannys that have a 1st gear that low and the ones that do are expensive |
