Throttlebody Issues

QUESTION: Lil John28 2000 asks: I just bought an 1986 iroc and I'm putting in a chip. If I put a bigger throttle body on it , wont it give me even more power? if so where can I order one from, or can you put a mass air unit on like the mustangs have? trying to push more horses out of it by doing this. Please let me know!!! thanks again Jeff.

The stock throttle body is 48 mm bores which flows at about 650 CFM. An after market on with 52 mm bores-which flows up to 780 CCM- can be easily installed and should, under ideal circumstances, increase power by an average of 10-15HP. This is a lot more than you'd get with a most chips-which I'm not a big fan of. You can go as high as 1000 CFM (58 mm), but, from what I understand, the plenum would have to be bored out. They are available from: Edelbrock, Lenginfelter, SPD, Holley, Accel, et. Some prices: Edelbrock 52 mm #3803: $328.00 + shipping at Summit Racing, SPD 52 mm /w foil: $230.00 + shipping, Holley 52 mm #112-502: $346.00 + shipping Summit Racing, just to name a few. I think the Accel
unit is around $450.00.

I think you can safely go to a 52mm throttle body, but if you go any bigger your plenum has to be bored, not to mention an adapter kit that has to be purchased, and the real kicker is that you will need bigger injectors. This can be quite expensive. I have tried this is how I know. The 52mm is the best way to go unless you have a lot of money. I know injectors alone are around $500.00.
