Oil Leak Issues

QUESTION: Curt Lewis asks: I am the original owner of a 1985 IROC-Z, which currently has 113K miles on it. I had the heads replaced in December of 1998 when it had close to 104K miles on it. I have oil accumulating on the intake manifold, only on the passenger side of the engine. It pools up in the recesses of the intake just below where the intake plenum attaches to the intake. Where is it coming from? The other question is my oil pressure. When I first start the engine, the oil pressure reads somewhere between 30 and 40 psi. Once it warms up, it remains around 30 psi as long as it's running down the road. However, when I stop at a stop light or something, oil pressure drops to just above the red line of the oil pressure gauge. Do you have any idea why this is?

1) Oil leakage: You might want to check to see if the oil is coming from
the area of the distributor, as this is a
common occurrence for these motors. The
distib. seal might need replacement. It doesn't sound
like the leak has anything to do with the
heads being replaced.

2) Oil Pressure: 35-40 PSI is pretty common (I run 60-65 psi for greater
engine longevity). As the oil heats up,
pressure tends to drop a bit. And the gauge might even be somewhat inaccurate. You might want to have the oil pressure adjustment on
the pump re-adjusted and checked professionally to ensure the adjustment is stable with an outside known accurate measurement source. This
lack of pressure stability might be related to the leakage your experiencing. Perhaps air pockets
are getting into the oil from the area of
the leak mentioned above.
