Speed Governer

I have an 87 305 I-ROCZ .Auotmatic tran.I was wondering how do I disable what ever is limiting me to only 110mph? The engine gets shut down, so to speak, and then will resume speed at about 95-100 mph. I have heard of a governer that might be the cause but I cant find any informatin about it in the chiltons manuals. Thanks.

Usually, governors of this sort are programmed in the PROM of the ECU and requires replacement. You might want to see about getting an aftermarket chip, or if a similar PROM from the factory can be installed in the ECM which does not have the speed limiter. Typically, these things are to limit the speed of the car due to the tires installed. Since the IROC typically comes with 'V' rated tires (up to 150 MPH), there should be no problem with speed rating matching of the top speed to the tires. Therefore, this leads me to believe a prom for a lower speed rated tire was accidentally installed in your ECM. I have an '86 and my car has no problem doing 140mph+. The other reason for a governor of such low speed may have been to please the insurance companies (they
have no sense of fun). The dealer should be able to help you find out if the right prom is in your ECM.
