Tire Fitting

QUESTION: Tim Micca asks: I have a 1985 IROC with the factory 16"rims. My question is will 255-50-16" tires fit on the front? I've owned this car for 11 years and decided to broaden its stance. On the rear I have 275-50-16's which looks awesome, but the front 245-50's are about due to be replaced. You're help on this is greatly appreciated..

Ok, I knew this woman who's boyfriend's car (1986 IROC) was accidentally mounted with 255/60vr-16 Goodyear tires. She complained about a lot of rubbing' and 'scraping' noises coming from the car...I looked at the tires and found them to be the 10mm wider 255 rather than the 245s. My front wheel/fender wells always have 'scraping' noises from the left front tire at max. left lock, especially if I accelerate a bit. So the fit is real tight. These cars where really set up for 215/60-15 back in '82, but, the 245s are already pushing it. The 275s in the back are extremely wide. Have you checked for wear on the inside side walls from them rubbing against the unibody? If you do see wear marks, you'll probably get a flat sometime down the road due to the rear axle 'flexing' in it's suspension mounts, especially if your really hammering around those corners and the wider the tire, the more wear and stress is placed on the wheel bearings and related assemblies...
